Cairns Christmas Checklist

Whether you are a seasoned local or this is your first Christmas in the land down under, there’s nothing quite like getting into the Chrissy spirit in December. While everyone knows of the ‘stereotypical’ Christmas with white snow, the majority of the world experiences a no-snow festive season.

While for those new to a warm Christmas like the one we have here in Cairns, it might feel odd to celebrate Christmas in the middle of summer (especially as despite the heat, you’ll still hear carols about snow, pictures of snow, stories about snow, fake snow in windows, fake snow on Christmas trees, snow, snow, snow) however, there are still a lot of awesome ways to enjoy Christmas in the tropics. After all, Cairns is a tropical paradise and why would you not want to celebrate the biggest holiday of the year here here?!

Christmas Markets

Cairns Local Christmas Market

Christmas markets are not only for Europe. Find the Cairns Local Christmas Market at Fred Moule Pavillion at the Cairns Showgrounds. The Cairns Showgrounds are located on Mulgrave Road, in walking distance to almost all Cairns Sharehouses. Gather your flatmates and go hunting for a vintage locally made craft at over 150 stalls.

Yungaburra Christmas Markets

Although further afield in Yungaburra in the Atherton Tablelands, these Christmas Markets are well worth the road trip. The Yungaburra Christmas Markets are a hit every year with extra stalls included especially for Christmas. Find a Christmas gift for your friends and family back home, or pick up something nice for your Cairns Sharehouse flatmate. While you’re here drop by Lake Eacham for a cool dip afterwards.

Cairns we like to get lit. For something close to home don’t forget to check out the Christmas Tree on the Cairns Esplanade. This gigantic tree is impressive, and stands front and centre at the top of the Cairns Lagoon.
